How Staircase Layouts and Stringers Work
A staircase consists of three core components:
- Total Rise: The exact vertical distance measured from the finished lower floor surface to the finished upper floor landing.
- Risers: The vertical boards or vertical gaps between steps.
- Treads: The horizontal boards that your feet step on.
- Stringers: The diagonal 2x12 support timbers that are notched out to hold all treads and risers.
Because the top step lands directly onto the upper floor surface, there is always 1 fewer physical tread than risers.

IRC Building Code Requirements for Stairs
To pass residential framing inspection under the International Residential Code (IRC Section R311.7):
- Maximum Riser Height: Cannot exceed 7.75 inches (7-3/4").
- Minimum Tread Depth: Cannot be less than 10.0 inches (measured horizontally from leading edge to leading edge).
- Maximum Step-to-Step Variance: The tallest riser cannot differ from the shortest riser by more than 3/8 inch (0.375") anywhere along the flight of stairs.
- Minimum Stair Width: 36 inches clear width above the handrail.
- Minimum Headroom: 6 feet 8 inches (80 inches) measured vertically from the leading edge of every tread to the finished ceiling.

Under the IRC building code, the maximum allowable riser height for residential stairs is 7.75 inches (7-3/4") and the minimum tread depth is 10.0 inches.
Stair stringers must be cut from solid, knot-free 2x12 lumber. Using a 2x10 is prohibited by most building codes because notching leaves insufficient solid wood (the stringer throat) to carry dynamic live loads.
Because the top riser steps directly onto the finished upper floor landing. For example, a 14-riser staircase only requires 13 physical wooden treads.
The ideal angle for interior residential stairs ranges between 30 and 37 degrees. Angles steeper than 40 degrees feel uncomfortably steep and are harder for young children or seniors to climb.
Nosing is the rounded front edge of the tread that extends out over the riser below. IRC code requires nosing to overhang between 3/4 inch and 1-1/4 inches on stairs with solid risers.
