What is a Board Foot?

A **Board Foot** (abbreviated as FBM - Foot Board Measure) is a specialized unit of volume used in North America for hardwood and softwood lumber. It represents a volume of wood equivalent to a board measuring 12 inches wide, 12 inches long, and 1 inch thick (12" x 12" x 1" = 144 cubic inches).

Board Foot Formulas:

Depending on your length unit inputs, wood volume is resolved via:

If Length is in Feet:
Board Feet = [ Thickness (in) * Width (in) * Length (ft) ] / 12

If Length is in Inches:
Board Feet = [ Thickness (in) * Width (in) * Length (in) ] / 144

Note on Nominal vs. Actual Lumber sizes: Hardwood lumber is traditionally measured and sold by nominal rough green dimensions (e.g. a nominal "2x4" board is rough, but actual dried and surfaced dimensions measure 1.5" x 3.5"). Keep this in mind when entering thickness and width variables.
