How Drywall Materials are Calculated
Drywall (also known as gypsum board, plasterboard, or sheetrock) is measured by total square footage of wall and ceiling coverage.
To estimate materials accurately for a room:
- Find the room perimeter (2 × Length + 2 × Width) and multiply by wall height to get total wall area.
- Calculate ceiling area (Length × Width) if you are finishing the ceiling.
- Subtract major door and window openings (a standard door is ~20 sq ft; an average window is ~15 sq ft).
- Add a 10% waste buffer to account for edge cuts, outlets, and corners.
- Divide the total square footage by the area of your drywall sheet size (32 sq ft for 4x8, 40 sq ft for 4x10, 48 sq ft for 4x12) and round up to the next full sheet.

4x8 vs 4x12 Drywall Sheets: Which Should You Buy?
Choosing the right drywall sheet length can dramatically improve the final finish and save days of sanding:
- 4x8 Sheets (32 sq ft, ~55 lbs): Best for DIY homeowners working alone or renovating tight spaces with narrow staircases and hallways. Easier to lift, transport in standard pickup trucks, and fit around doorways.
- 4x12 Sheets (48 sq ft, ~82 lbs): Best for professional contractors and larger open rooms. Using 12-foot boards reduces vertical butt joints by 25% to 30%, which means significantly less taping, mudding, and sanding.
