Understanding CPM in Marketing
Published on: July 8, 2026 | Category: Business
In digital advertising and media buying, CPM is one of the most common metric variables used to measure the cost and scale of advertising campaigns. If you've ever purchased ads on Google, Meta, or TikTok, you've likely encountered CPM. Let's explore what it stands for and how to calculate it.
What does CPM mean?
CPM stands for Cost Per Mille. "Mille" is the Latin word for a thousand. Therefore, CPM translates directly to Cost Per Thousand Impressions. An impression is logged every time an advertisement is displayed on a user's screen.
The CPM Formula
To calculate CPM, you need to divide the total cost of the campaign by the total number of impressions, and then multiply the result by 1,000:
Example: If a marketer spends $500 on an advertising campaign and receives 100,000 impressions, the CPM calculation is:
CPM = 0.005 * 1,000 = $5.00
This means the advertiser paid exactly $5.00 for every 1,000 views of their ad.
Deriving Cost and Impressions
The standard formula can also be rearranged to find the required budget or the estimated impressions if you know your target CPM:
