How Weighted Grade Averages Are Calculated
Most schools and colleges use weighted grades to calculate semester averages because exams, finals, and projects carry more academic value than daily homework. The mathematical weighted formula is:
Weighted Grade = [ ∑ (Grade * Weight) ] / [ ∑ Weight ]
Example Calculation:
Suppose you have three assignments with these numbers:
- Homework: Grade = 95%, Weight = 20%
- Quizzes: Grade = 88%, Weight = 30%
- Final Exam: Grade = 82%, Weight = 50%
Step-by-step math:
Sum of Products = (95 * 20) + (88 * 30) + (82 * 50)
Sum of Products = 1900 + 2640 + 4100 = 8,640
Sum of Weights = 20 + 30 + 50 = 100
Final Average = 8,640 / 100 = 86.4%
