The Mathematics of Stone Estimations
Similar to gravel, stone bulk materials are sold by volume (cubic yards) or weight (tons). Because different stone types have differing mineral densities, weight conversion varies:
1. Calculate Cubic Volume:
Volume (cu ft) = Length (ft) * Width (ft) * (Depth (in) / 12)
Volume (cu yd) = Volume (cu ft) / 27
Volume (cu yd) = Volume (cu ft) / 27
2. Calculate Weight:
We multiply the cubic yard volume by the density coefficient factor ($D_f$) specific to that rock mineral structure:
Weight (Tons) = Volume (cu yd) * D_f
