How to Estimate Asphalt Requirements
Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) is dense and heavy. Industrial estimations operate on the basis that compacted hot asphalt weighs approximately **148 lbs per cubic foot** (approx. 2.0 tons per cubic yard). Marking out raw quantities uses three steps:
1. Calculate Volume in Cubic Feet:
Volume (cu ft) = Length (ft) * Width (ft) * (Thickness (in) / 12)
2. Convert to Cubic Yards & Area:
Volume (cu yd) = Volume (cu ft) / 27
Area (sq yd) = (Length (ft) * Width (ft)) / 9
Area (sq yd) = (Length (ft) * Width (ft)) / 9
3. Solve Weight:
Weight (lbs) = Volume (cu ft) * 148
Weight (Tons) = Weight (lbs) / 2,000
Weight (Tons) = Weight (lbs) / 2,000
